Following a degree in biology (First Class Hons) and a PhD in freshwater biology, I spent 10 years ‘getting my feet wet’ around the rivers of north-west England, working as a biologist/ecologist for the Environment Agency. Towards the end of this, I began to manage R&D and publishing projects, and when an opportunity arose to work for the Freshwater Biological Association (FBA) – an internationally recognised scientific society – I jumped at the chance to build on this experience.
In my 15 years with the FBA, I had responsibility for membership, publications and conferences. I also helped to co-ordinate AGMs and the production of annual reports, provided advice on governance, and input to strategic and operational management reviews. I gained experience at board level and latterly acted as officer-in-charge of the Association’s headquarters.
Outside of work, I was a member of the management committee (trustee) of a charitable sheltered housing scheme for several years, have held two honorary treasurer positions for not-for-profit organisations, and been a membership secretary.
I am now drawing on my experience to offer a range of freelance services to associations and charities and, using my science background, specialist editing services to publishers and the scientific community.
